Winlink and Digital with QRP SDR HF/VHF/UHF transceiver

EXIT

Prepared by Michael Gordon, AG7MG, for presentation to DCC 2022

Modern radios with built-in "soundcard" interfaces greatly simplify using digital modes. Simple is good particularly in urgencies and emergencies. Combining simplicity with portability, the new breed of QRP Software Defined Radios such as the ICOM IC-705 make field use of Winlink and other digital modes relatively easy.

Once configured, you can be on the air in five minutes or the time it takes to

boot up your laptop computer and while it is booting up, hook up the USB cable, attach the antenna (or the other way round), turn on the radio and tune the radio or select a memory.

Here is the reception report for the IC-705 in the 20 meter band, FT8 mode, 10 watts:

For comparison, here is ICOM IC-7300, same band, 40 watts (6db stronger):

Both are feeding an MFJ loop antenna inside my house. That's amazing!
